The Extra Mile: Why Small Gestures Win Big for Nigerian SMEs This Customer Service Week
Customer Service Week runs from 5 to 9 October 2026, and this year’s theme is “The Extra Mile”. Here is how to make it a growth strategy, not just a celebration.
Quick note before we dive in: This article also comes with an audio Deep Dive, where we take the conversation a little further—exploring why 88% of customers value experience as much as products, how to solve real service bottlenecks, and practical ways small teams can go “The Extra Mile” without a big budget. It’s an easy, relaxed listen that adds extra perspective on building customer loyalty
Executive Summary Customer Service Week 2026 runs from Monday 5 to Friday 9 October, with Global CX Day on Tuesday 6 October.[1][2] This year’s theme, “The Extra Mile”, is a timely reminder for Nigerian SMEs that service is a revenue strategy. Research shows that 32% of customers will walk away from a brand they love after just one bad experience,[3] while a 5% improvement in customer retention has been linked to a 25% to 95% increase in profits.[4] This article shows what the extra mile looks like in practice, gives you a low-cost checklist for this week, and explains how the right financing helps you keep the promises you make to customers. It closes with CreditPRO’s own Extra Mile promise to every customer.
Here is a number every business owner should pin above their desk: one in three customers will leave a brand they love after a single bad experience.[3] Now put it next to this one: keeping just 5% more of your existing customers has been shown to lift profits by between 25% and 95%.[4] The gap between those two numbers is where small businesses win or lose.
This week, organisations around the world are celebrating Customer Service Week under the theme “The Extra Mile”. For a Nigerian SME, the extra mile is not a slogan. It is the delivery that arrives on time despite traffic, the call returned before the customer chases you, and the supplier order you fulfil in full even when cash is tight. It is also, as we will see, a matter of good financial planning.

Customer Service Week is an international celebration held every year in the first full week of October. In 2026 it runs from Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October, with Global CX Day (a day dedicated to customer experience) falling on Tuesday 6 October.[1][2] Businesses use the week to thank customers, recognise frontline teams and recommit to service standards.
The 2026 theme, “The Extra Mile”, asks a simple question: what do you do for your customers that they did not expect, and would miss if it stopped? As one commentator put it, it is “one week to celebrate, 52 weeks to practice it”.[2]
Large companies can afford to lose a few customers. Most SMEs cannot. When your business depends on a few dozen regular buyers, a handful of corporate clients or word of mouth in one neighbourhood, every relationship counts.
STAT SPOTLIGHT 88% of customers say the experience a company provides is as important as its products or services.[5] 16% is the price premium consumers say they will pay for a great customer experience.[3]
That second figure deserves attention. In a market where many SMEs compete mainly on price, service is one of the few ways to earn a better margin without cutting corners. Customers who trust you complain less about price, refer others, and forgive the occasional mistake.
Consider Chioma, a fictional owner of a catering business in Abuja. She is not the cheapest caterer in town. But she confirms every booking by voice note, arrives an hour early, and sends a thank-you message with photos the morning after each event. Her clients rarely negotiate on price, and most of her new business comes from referrals. That is the extra mile turning into revenue.
Going the extra mile does not require a big budget. It requires habits. Here is a checklist you can start this week:
At CreditPRO, we spend our days with SME owners, and we see a pattern. The businesses with the strongest customer loyalty are rarely the ones with the biggest marketing budgets. They are the ones that keep their promises consistently. And very often, keeping a promise comes down to having the right funding at the right time.
Imagine Chioma receives a purchase order to cater a corporate client’s end-of-year events. It is the biggest contract she has ever won, but she must buy ingredients, hire extra staff and rent equipment weeks before she is paid. Saying no would disappoint a valuable client. Saying yes without funding could mean a late or scaled-down delivery. This is exactly what LPO finance is designed for: funding to fulfil a confirmed purchase order, so you can deliver in full and on time. You can see how it works on our LPO finance page.
Going the extra mile sometimes means giving a good customer time to pay. The challenge is that your rent, salaries and suppliers will not wait. Invoice discounting lets you unlock cash tied up in approved invoices, so you can offer flexible terms to customers without starving your own business. Learn more on our invoice discounting page.
Celebrating customer service is easy. Living it every day is harder. So this Customer Service Week, we are making a simple promise to every CreditPRO customer:
THE CREDITPRO EXTRA MILE PROMISE “We will go the extra mile for every customer. We will listen, respond quickly, communicate clearly, and take responsibility. Together, we will make every customer feel valued.”
Here is what that means in practice:
Clear communication starts before you even speak to us. Our loan calculator lets you estimate repayments with clear numbers, and our online loan application portal lets you apply from your shop, office or phone, at a time that suits you. And if you ever feel we have fallen short of this promise, please tell us through our contact page. That feedback is how we keep getting better.
Customer Service Week is a good moment to celebrate the people who serve your customers. But the real test of “The Extra Mile” is what happens in week two, week ten and week fifty. Pick two items from the checklist above and start this week. Thank your best customers, keep one clear promise, and make sure your cash flow can support the commitments you make. And if you need a partner who will go the extra mile for you, we are here to listen.
To every SME owner, customer service professional and frontline team member across Nigeria: thank you for the miles you go every day. Happy Customer Service Week from all of us at CreditPRO.
